Review: Toki Tori (WiiWare)

Toki Tori, Nintendo, Wii, WiiWare, Two TribesIn , one of the first games for ’s WiiWare, you control a young chick called “” who wants nothing more in life then to gather eggs. First things first, this isn’t the first game featuring the yellow fellow. His first appearance was in for the Game Boy Color and there was also a version for certain Smartphones. This version for WiiWare is just an enhanced remake of the original Game Boy Color-game.

is his name and collecting eggs is his game!

used high resolution images to make the game look better than the GBC-version but it’s not a technical wonder on the . There are a lot of puzzles in this game so if you’re a puzzle-fan or platform-fan you’ll replay this game for a long time after you finished all the levels. It can keep you entertained and that aspect is nicely done by . As I’m speaking of the levels I might as well say there are over 70 levels you can play. The levels differ in difficulty, they can be laughably easy to extremely hard where you really need to think about the pattern you want to take to finish the level. In total there are 4 worlds: a forest, a castle filled with ghosts, a sewer system and underwater. Each world has 10 stages and if you complete one world you will unlock special ‘hard’ levels which are, as the word implies, difficult. But these extra levels are optional so you don’t have to play them to finish the “basic game” which are the normal levels.

There’s also a little extra called a ‘Joker’ (or wild card) that you can use if you really can’t get past a certain level. But if you get stuck again in a different level you will be forced to still complete the level you used the ‘Joker’ in so you can get it back. So there’s only one and you have to think about when you need to use it. I recommend using it in some of the later levels.

If I can talk a little about control schemes, you can use the Remote alone (without nunchuk), the Classic Controller and the GameCube-controller. People who played the original on Game Boy Color will probably prefer the Classic or GameCube-controller but I played the game with the Remote. It’s a little disorienting at first but after 15 to 20 minutes you’ll get used to it. You can also get a second player to help you out since the second player can use a -Remote to draw hints on where to go in a level.

The game also uses the Message Board. If you stop playing when you’re tired will leave a ‘diary’ of what happened that day on the Message Board. It’s a nice little touch. These diary segments are only for you to read since you can’t send them to a friend using the Wi-Fi Connection.

About the music and sound effects I don’t have much to say. It’s good music for this game but it’s not music you want to listen to everywhere like the music from Zelda or Mario. If you play a level multiple times and you can’t succeed you might get irritated by the music but this is not always the case. Therefore there’s an option to turn the music OFF.

Conclusion
This is really a game you should download and play when there isn’t another game available on WiiWare that you like. Personally I think the price is a little too high. I think 700 or 800 Points would have been more than enough. However, if you’re a fan of puzzle-games then you’ll probably love this one from .

Gameplay: 75/100 (over 70 levels to play ranging from easy to difficult)
Graphics: 60/100 (might have been nice for a GBA-game but not on the )
Sound: 65/100 (some nice beats, suitable for the game)
Replay value: 60/100 (if you like puzzles in a platform-game you’ll play this for weeks)
Final Score: 65/100

I think you’re being a bit too harsh on this, especially after your Lost Winds review. There’s a lot more content here for 1000 points, and only about half of the levels are from the GB game.
